Communications about art are all in the engineering.
For the Federation of British Artists’ 50th anniversary catalogue, the design task has been to create a framework that will enable the character of each of the FBA’s societies to come through while presenting an historic and forward-thinking whole.
To do this, we’ve created a quietly-confident layout which allows for some celebratory gold and thought-provoking headlines while providing a strong visual overview. So that the catalogue can also function as a book during the anniversary year, we’ve avoided A sizes in favour of a more bookish, non-standard format. The design has been carried-through to invitations for the opening and anniversary celebrations.
Timed around events and with internal editing on the page, this project has involved process design and production management as well as graphic design. There are a lot of contributors to this type of project; balancing their activities and requirements is as critical to its success as the creative work.
We were delighted to hear that the catalogue had tripled expected sales.
