Long live the art school

The marvellously Boris-like speech invitingly laid-out at the beginning of this book says it all about UCA Epsom’s approach to design: this is a course that loves content and craft. The graduate show, at the Gallery in Redchurch Street, is a proper exhibition, linked cleverly with the web. The portfolios are books. And staff and students have managed to produce a book for future students, at astonishing speed, ready for the opening. It’s a must-see for anyone who believes that all you need to be a designer is a software course. And if you’re a professional, it’s an uplifting show of work that’s not just well-designed but thought-provoking. The best bit of the book? The scratch and sniff postcard. As you walk along corridors, past studios and printmaking workshops, art schools smell of possibility…
