Getting editorial: Cosmic Futures

Space. It’s big…

…so when you’re got a lot to say about Mars and a magazine to produce, engineering your stories is a good place to start.

The young winners of the Cosmic Futures competition to write or design about the British space industry have been creating a new magazine about Mars, aimed at children. And they’re not short of ideas.

Lydia was brought into a planning day hosted by Physics outreach organisation SEPnet and Venture Thinking at Queen Mary, University of London, to explain how editorial design works and help the students to shape their ideas into a page plan. Professor Peter McOwan explained how to bring science stories to life for new audiences. At the end of the day, the students had a brief for the university’s design department.

The magazine was launched at the House of Commons and is now circulated at space events for schools.
